Apple Releases iOS 18.4 and more!

iOS 18.4 and iPadOS 18.4: Fresh Features for iPhone and iPad

The iOS 18.4 and iPadOS 18.4 updates share a core set of improvements, with some features tailored to the unique capabilities of each device. Here’s everything new, with details on how these additions enhance your experience.

Priority Notifications (iOS and iPadOS)

One of the standout features in this update is Priority Notifications, powered by Apple Intelligence. This feature uses on-device AI to analyze your incoming notifications and determine which ones deserve your immediate attention. Important alerts—like urgent messages or time-sensitive reminders—get elevated to a dedicated section at the top of your Lock Screen. You can enable it by heading to Settings > Notifications > Prioritize Notifications and flipping the toggle. Bonus: you can fine-tune which apps get priority treatment on a per-app basis. It’s a small but impactful way to cut through notification clutter.

Visual Intelligence Comes to iPhone 15 Pro (iOS Only)

Previously exclusive to iPhone 16 models, Visual Intelligence is now available on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. This feature lets you point your camera at objects in the real world to get instant information—like identifying a plant or scanning a QR code—using Apple Intelligence. On the iPhone 15 Pro, you can activate it via the Action Button or a new Control Center toggle under the renamed “Apple Intelligence & Siri” section. It’s a handy tool for the curious, and it’s great to see it expand beyond the latest hardware.

Ambient Music in Control Center (iOS and iPadOS)

Need some background vibes? iOS 18.4 and iPadOS 18.4 introduce an Ambient Music feature directly in Control Center. Tap the plus sign in Control Center to add the new Ambient Music tile, which offers four curated Apple Music playlists: Sleep, Chill, Productivity, and Wellbeing. Each playlist is designed to match a specific mood, and you can swap out the defaults for any playlist in your library by editing the control. It’s a seamless way to set the tone without digging through the Music app.

New Emoji Characters (iOS and iPadOS)

Emoji fans rejoice: seven new characters join the lineup in this update. You’ll find a face with bags under eyes (perfect for those late nights), a fingerprint, a harp, a leafless tree, a root vegetable, a shovel, and a splatter. They’re not the wildest additions, but they add some fun and utility to your chats. Look for them in the emoji keyboard once you update.

Apple News+ Food Section (iOS and iPadOS)

For Apple News+ subscribers, there’s a new Food section in the News app, packed with restaurant reviews, lifestyle articles, and tens of thousands of recipes. The real gem here is the “Cook” mode for recipes, which offers step-by-step guidance with built-in timers—ideal for keeping your iPhone or iPad by your side in the kitchen. It’s optimized for the iPad’s larger screen, making it a natural fit for culinary adventurers.

Image Playground: Sketch Style (iOS and iPadOS)

Apple’s Image Playground app gets a creative boost with a new Sketch style. Alongside the existing Animation and Illustration options, Sketch lets you generate hand-drawn-looking images from text prompts or tweak existing photos in your library. It’s a playful addition for anyone who loves dabbling in AI-generated art, accessible right from the Image Playground app or Messages.

Apple Intelligence Language Expansion (iOS and iPadOS)

Apple Intelligence is going global with support for new languages, including French, German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese (simplified), plus localized English for Singapore and India. This means more users can tap into AI-driven features like Writing Tools and Priority Notifications in their native tongue. It’s a big step toward making Apple’s AI more inclusive.

AirPods Max USB-C Enhancements (iOS and iPadOS)

If you’ve got the USB-C version of AirPods Max, this update unlocks wired lossless audio (24-bit, 48 kHz) and ultra-low latency playback when connected via USB-C. It’s a boon for audiophiles and creators who want pristine sound quality without relying on Bluetooth. The firmware update for AirPods Max rolls out alongside iOS 18.4 and iPadOS 18.4.

Mail Categorization Hits iPad (iPadOS Only)

iPad users finally get the Mail app overhaul introduced in iOS 18.2. Incoming emails are now sorted into categories—Primary (personal and urgent), Transactions (receipts), Updates (news and social), and Promotions (marketing)—all processed on-device. It’s a cleaner way to manage your inbox, and you can switch back to a classic list view if it’s not your thing. iPhone users already have this, but it’s a welcome addition to iPadOS.

Genmoji Label Update (iOS and iPadOS)

The Genmoji icon on the emoji keyboard now clearly says “Genmoji” instead of just showing a multicolored smiley face. It’s a minor tweak, but it makes it easier to spot where to create your custom AI-generated emoji. Small quality-of-life improvements like this add up.

Photos App Filters (iOS and iPadOS)

The Photos app gains two new filtering options: “Not in an Album” and “Shared with You.” The former helps you find stray images that haven’t been organized, while the latter pulls up pics sent via Messages or other apps. It’s a practical way to sift through your library, especially if you’re a photo hoarder.

Apple Vision Pro App (iOS Only)

A new Vision Pro app lands on iPhone, letting Vision Pro owners browse and download content, manage their headset, and control guest experiences—all from their phone. It only appears if your Apple ID is linked to a Vision Pro, making it a niche but useful addition for mixed-reality fans.

Shortcuts App Enhancements (iOS and iPadOS)

The Shortcuts app gets a slew of new actions for tweaking settings in Apple apps like Safari, Maps, Calendar, Reminders, TV, Books, Notes, Voice Memos, and Weather. For example, in Maps, you can set actions to avoid tolls or adjust volume levels. It’s a tinkerer’s dream and could pave the way for deeper Siri integration down the line.

macOS 15.4: Refinements for the Mac

macOS 15.4 keeps pace with its mobile siblings, bringing a mix of Apple Intelligence upgrades and Mac-specific features. Here’s what’s new for your MacBook or desktop.

Priority Notifications

Like iOS and iPadOS, macOS 15.4 introduces Priority Notifications. Apple Intelligence highlights critical alerts in a prominent spot, ensuring you don’t miss what matters. Enable it in System Settings > Notifications and customize it per app—it’s a productivity booster for busy Mac users.

Apple Intelligence Language Support

The same language expansion—French, German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Chinese (simplified), and localized English for Singapore and India—comes to macOS. This broadens access to AI features across apps like Mail and Notes, aligning the Mac with iPhone and iPad.

Mail Categorization

The redesigned Mail app, with its AI-driven categorization (Primary, Transactions, Updates, Promotions), finally arrives on macOS. It’s been a hit on iPhone since iOS 18.2 and iPad with iPadOS 18.4, and now Mac users can enjoy the same streamlined inbox experience.

Proximity-Based Mac Setup

Setting up a new Mac just got easier. With macOS 15.4, you can use a nearby iPhone or iPad to sign into your Apple Account during initial setup. It’s a slick, seamless way to get started, leveraging the devices you already have on hand.

Control Center Tweaks

Control Center on macOS gets subtle but useful updates. The Cellular and Wi-Fi toggles now display signal strength in bars, giving you a quick read on connectivity. The Brightness and Sound sliders change color when lowered below the icon’s position, and the Focus tile adds two small arrows to hint at additional options. These refinements make Control Center more intuitive.

New Emoji

The seven new emoji—face with bags under eyes, fingerprint, harp, leafless tree, root vegetable, shovel, and splatter—carry over to macOS, keeping your chats and documents expressive across platforms.

Image Playground: Sketch Style

Just like on iOS and iPadOS, Image Playground on macOS adds the Sketch style for creating hand-drawn-style images. It’s a fun creative tool that syncs across your Apple devices via iCloud.

Shortcuts App Enhancements

The Shortcuts app on macOS mirrors its mobile counterparts with new actions for Apple apps. Whether it’s tweaking Maps settings or automating Calendar tasks, these additions give power users more control over their workflows.
